Officer Hugo Arango, 24, of the Doraville, Georgia Police Department was murdered by illegal alien Bautista Ramirez May 13, 2000 while working at an off-duty job at a night club.
The club manager got Arango after a report of 3 men attempting to break into a car. Arango detained the 3 and had them leaning on a car to search them. While he searched one of them, another pulled a gun and shot the club manager in the face and then shot Arango 3 times in the vest and head. Reports say his vest deflected the chest shot.
Officer Arango was killed but the club's manager, David Contreras survived.
On June 25, 2003, a DeKalb County jury found Ramirez guilty of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated battery, and carrying a concealed weapon, but acquitted him of malice murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. He also received a 20-year sentence for shooting a night club manager and 12 months for carrying a concealed weapon
