Victim: Christy Ayala

Navy Police Woman Murdered By Illegal Alien

Perpetrator: Miguel Bartolo

Crime Description:

Christy Ayala, 24, an active duty Navy police woman, was killed by illegal alien Miguel Bartolo on February 18, 2006. Assistant District Attorney Mark Ward said "They danced together, had a few drinks together at the Club IP, and she voluntarily went outside with him when an argument over sex arose." Bartolo strangled her until she fainted then dragged her body into the water.

Bartolo stole Ayala cell phone. He used it, which is how investigators tracked him down in Houston, Texas, Ward said.

Bartolo, who does not speak English, was convicted in Harrison County Circuit Court to life in prison.

Jail records show Bartolo, 22, is from Oaxaca, Mexico. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had a hold on him, according to jail warden Don Cabana. Prosecutors said Bartolo had been working on a construction job at the IP but had been fired. He has no Social Security number or driver license, Ward said.

Ayala, a native of St Louis, MO, was a Navy police officer at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport. She was awaiting deployment to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Master-at-Arms 3rd Class Christy Ayala was selected as Naval Station Ingleside Junior Sailor of the Quarter in 2003. She was cited for professional achievement in performance of her duties while assigned as a patrolman. Ayala, "has always ensured that all infractions identified during her shift were expeditiously and accurately processed in accordance with security department procedures,"
