Victim: Gloria Marie Applegate

Illegal alien convicted of murdering woman in alley after attempted rape

Perpetrator: Daniel Estrada-Lopez

Crime Description:

Gloria Marie Applegate, 32 years old, had a history of mental illness dating back to her childhood. Described as a “troubled girl” by her sister, Jovetta Griffin, her parents wanted to get Gloria Marie help. Trying to protect her was difficult, Jovetta said, because the family was unable to get her declared ‘incompetent’, the law was not in their favor.  Her uncle, Don Applegate, talked to her several times a week and “begged” her to come live on his farm because she had “started to be a street person”. He said Gloria Marie “trusted everybody” and “didn’t think anyone would hurt her”. (1) (2) Gloria Marie’s body was found in an alley in Hamilton, Ohio, on Sunday, June 1, 2008.

Hours after Gloria Marie Applegate was released from jail on disorderly conduct, her naked body was discovered. She had been shot in the head and sexually assaulted, according to the coroner’s report. The Butler County Prosecutor said detectives believed Daniel Estrada-Lopez “forced himself on her” and this “resulted in her death”. The prosecutor described Gloria Marie’s killing as “cold-blooded” at “close range”. (3)

Estrada-Lopez was wanted on several outstanding, unspecified warrants.  The Butler County jury took less than three hours to find Lopez guilty of aggravated murder on October 5, 2008. He may serve anywhere from 23 years to life without parole. Sentencing will be on November 11, 2008.
