On April 3, 2006, David K. Bassore, 51, of Liberty, Kansas, was killed by illegal alien Raul Cabrera, 16, as he was driving home from work on Interstate 35.
Bassore, the former head football coach at Olathe North High School, died at the scene before paramedics arrived.
Police believe Cabrera may have been drag racing with another vehicle when his vehicle hit Bassore's truck, causing it to roll out of control. Investigators said a Dodge Neon clipped Bassore's pickup truck, then the pickup went off the road, rolling twice before it stopped on its side. Bassore was thrown from the vehicle.
Prosecutors charged the driver of the Neon, 16-year-old Raul Cabrera, of Shawnee, Kan., with one count of involuntary manslaughter in juvenile court
Officials said Cabrera is an illegal immigrant, and the judge decided the teen should remain in custody.
Friends and colleagues of Bassore said he had a big impact on students and staff. Bassore was remembered as being confident and full of energy, a well-spoken and genuine man who could laugh at himself. "People knew Dave cared for the kids and the kids knew he cared for them -- that's a lot of what they were sharing this morning," Olathe North Athletic Director Jerry Banks told KMBC's Donna Pitman. Olathe North High School.
Cabrera plead guilty in Wyandotte County juvenile court to a charge of involuntary manslaughter and was to be sentenced on Nov. 30, 2007.
