On May 2, 2006, Tomas Perez-Trinidad, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, picked up two sixth-grade girls, aged 12 and 13, near the Maxson Middle School in Plainfield, NJ and took them to his home where he sexually assaulted them.
The younger of the two girls reported the crime about two weeks later by identifying Perez-Trinidad as "Tomas," describing his red two-door Ford Mustang and leading police to the home, authorities said. The second victim then verified everything the younger girl alleged, according to prosecutors.
A Union County jury convicted Perez-Trinidad of sexually assaulting the two young girls. He now faces years in prison for aggravated sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a minor, criminal sexual contact and several other crime. After his prison term, the illegal immigrant from Guatemala faces deportation.
Union County Assistant Prosecutor Melissa Spagnoli, who tried the case, said Perez-Trinidad picked up the two girls the morning of May 2, 2006, near Maxson Middle School and took them to his home in the 1100 block of West Third Street, where the assaults occurred.
Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow praised the girls in a statement Thursday for having "great courage" to come forward and testify in court. "They deserve tremendous credit for helping to take this predator off the streets," he said.
The other two men were also charged as a result of the investigation. Hector Campos-Ventura and his brother, Romel Campos, pleaded guilty to sexual assault charges in January, authorities said. In May, each was sentenced to seven years in prison and will be registered as sex offenders, according to police. The brothers, both friends of Perez-Trinidad, will face deportation to their native El Salvador after finishing their prison terms, authorities said.
