Sarasota County, FL – Last week, Daniel Campos Garcia, 27, was sentenced to 13 years in prison after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter.
On November 7, 2010, Garcia ran a red light on University Parkway, causing a crash that killed 51-year-old Pamila Yoder. At the time of the crash, the mother of three was headed home for her own birthday celebration.
Garcia had a blood-alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit at the time.
Garcia suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center. However, surveillance footage captured the Mexican national simply walking out of the hospital, in his gown with an IV still attached to his arm.
It would be another five months before Garcia was arrested and charged with the crime.
Sarasota County Deputy Brian Barrett finally tracked-down the fugitive in Gainesville.
Yoder’s children were in court for Garcia’s sentencing and were allowed to make statements.
Her daughter, Tavy Chen told her mother’s killer: “I just wanted you to know my face. I will never forget what you did. I hope you never forget either.”
Another daughter, Madison Mehalko told the courtroom that Garcia walked out of the hospital “nonchalantly, as if he had done nothing wrong, not realizing the devastating impact he had printed upon all of us.”
More than a dozen of Yoder’s family members were in court that day, with many sobbing during the proceeding
