NEWPORT, Tennessee - Juan F. Zamora, 42, who is reportedly an illegal alien from Honduras who has lived in Cocke County for at least about four years, and has a criminal record, was arrested Thursday, Oct. 20, and charged with the rape of a 9-year-old child who lives in Newport, the Newport Police Department reported.
Judge John Bell set Zamora's bond at $1 million at the suspect's arraignment before the judge, Friday morning.
Det. Jason Ramsey of the NPD said Friday that he believes Judge Bell set the bond so high "because of the severity of the crime", and to keep Zamora, as a foreigner living illegally in the U.S., from bonding out and fleeing Cocke County, perhaps back to Honduras.
Zamora has been arrested at least five times in this area in recent years.
Law enforcement records with the NPD and the Cocke County Sheriff's Department show Zamora was arrested in January 2008 for domestic assault; in September 2008 for driving offenses; in 2009 for driving offenses; and earlier this year, in May, aggravated assault and driving on a revoked license with a prior DUI conviction.
