BEREA — Police arrested Hispanic man Saturday for allegedly kidnapping and raping 18-year-old mentally challenged teen.
The teen, who was a resident of an independent living home located between Richmond and Berea, had gone outside to take a walk Saturday morning when a truck with two Hispanic males inside stopped and forced her into the vehicle, according to Deputy Willard Reardon of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspects drove the teen to the Twin Lakes Subdivision, where she was raped by one of the males in an onsite construction urinal, Reardon said. The two men worked at the site and had been observed there earlier in the day by other workers, he said.
The teen later was picked up on old U.S. 25 by the worker in charge of her care and was taken to St. Joseph-Berea for treatment. Sheriff’s deputies collected evidence at the hospital.
The investigation led deputies to 31-year-old Pablo Dejesus Martinez, who listed his address as a Berea motel, Reardon said. There was no evidence implicating the second man in the truck, he added.
Martinez was charged with first-degree rape, kidnapping, no operator’s license and driving under the influence.
Reardon said he is unsure if the man, who said he has lived in the United States for eight years, is here legally.
The office will forward Martinez’s information to immigration officials.
Martinez is being held in the Madison County Detention Center. A bond had not been set as of late Saturday evening.
